Last year, we held our first theme recital as part of our year-end Spring recital. I’ve done themed recitals in the past but had never done one for our big studio-wide event.
Everyone loved it, and I’m excited to continue using themes for the time being. (BTW, I created a resource of more than 80 pieces of repertoire for holding a Wild West theme recital. Check it out here.)
To choose the theme, students were given this voting ballot and asked to mark any theme they found interesting and would enjoy, then list their top three.
After compiling the results, I narrowed it down to three options based on the overall vote count. From there, I picked the option marked by my oldest and/or longest-time students (even if those choices weren’t in their top three).
There’s really no right or wrong way to pick a winning theme, nor do you have to reveal your exact selection process! You can distribute the ballot to your entire studio or limit it to your longest-time students – however you want to do it!
Even though the recital takes place at the end of the school year, I like running the vote right away. It gives students something to look forward to from day one and gives me plenty of lead time to research, select, and assign repertoire.
