Happy Birthday By Ear: The Ultimate Teaching Resource
The Piano Pantry Podcast:
Episode #034 – How To Teach Students to Play Happy Birthday By Ear
Q: Is this a special arrangement?
A: No. It guides students to discover the melody and harmony on their own, but it also includes pages with a simple melody line and a chord chart-style notational option as well, for reference as needed.
Q: What key is it in?
A: In this resource, it is presented in G Major because that is a key that is comfortable, including a black key, and keeps them from getting stuck on starting on C and, in turn, thinking they’re playing in C.
Q: I want them to play in C. Can I still use this?
A: The resource is designed to support and encourage the process more than the final product, so yes, there are a lot of ways it can still be utilized even if they aren’t playing in G. You might just need to pencil in a few modifications as needed.
Q: I don’t have any MLT training. Can I still use this?
A: Yes! That is exactly why I created this product. To help teachers and students consider the bigger picture of playing by ear and not necessarily following a prescribed process for developing audiation.
Q: What levels is this best for?
A: You can use this book for students of all levels – beginner through late intermediate really / early advanced. It encourages creative exploration within a variety of difficulty levels. We keep it in students’ 3-ring binders and use the same pages year after year. They just get to do a little more with it each time as they grow!
Q: Is this available as a hard copy?
A: Not at the moment. If a hard copy is something you would like to see in this product someday, please let me know here.
